Quarter, Half, Full and Republic Gold Coins
Turkish ornamental gold coins are struck by the State Mint at fixed weights, and all of them are 22 carat. What differs is the weight and the die — not the carat.
Weight comparison
| Type | Weight | Carat | Pure gold inside |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quarter (çeyrek) | 1.75 g | 22 carat | ≈ 1.60 g |
| Half (yarım) | 3.50 g | 22 carat | ≈ 3.21 g |
| Full (tam / ziynet) | 7.00 g | 22 carat | ≈ 6.41 g |
| Republic (Cumhuriyet / Ata) | 7.216 g | 22 carat | ≈ 6.61 g |
Full gold versus Republic gold
These two are the most often confused. Both are 22 carat; the difference is weight. The ornamental full coin is 7.00 grams, the Republic (Ata) coin 7.216 grams — about 0.2 grams heavier, and worth correspondingly more.
Gram gold or ornamental coins?
Gram gold is 24 carat and carries the lowest workmanship share; it is the investment closest to pure gold. Ornamental coins are 22 carat, can be worn, and have a place in the tradition of gift-giving. For investment alone, gram gold suits better; if you want a piece that is both worn and held, coins make more sense.
A note on payment
Under Turkish regulation, investment gold cannot be paid for in credit card instalments — only in full.
